Description

Several of you have been interested in where I am shooting my bird series from. Here's the short answer. Much to my delight, I can see everything on my deck through the kitchen window but because of the angle, lighting, etc., the birds outside cannot see me inside even with kitchen the lights on. 98% of my shots are from the tripod in this position. Typically I use zoom levels anywhere between 100mm and 300mm. The key to catching action is using the sequential (multiple) picture mode. Time of the day dictates lighting conditions. The big tree overhanging the deck gives the birds an ideal place to sit while waiting for other birds to finish at the feeder. However, the tree also gives the squirrels easy access. But, if I were designing a home bird shooting setup...this has all the features I'd want. Of course...having the birds in the first place helps a great deal :-) Thanks for all your wonderful support, Bill:)

This is sooo clever Bill. You got my mind reeling here, with ways I can do this. I have a deck outside my bedroom; where, on that side of the house is very quiet (LOL) .. not many people buzzin around that is .. I think this setup would be ideal. wow.. I can't wait. I've got to do this myself. But first, there's a window to wash! LOL Thank you SOOO MUCH for showing us how you do it ... :) :)

thank you! it's always interesting to see how successful photos are made. it must also be pretty cool to be taking 'nature' pics and being able to get a cup of coffee to relieve the strain of blind sitting. SUPERB!!!!

Thanks for showing us your blind! I know how carefully you washed that window, and it's sure paid off! :) I had a slightly different image in mind, and this puts it all into place for me. (Somehow I pictured a larger window next to a round kitchen table, newspaper and coffee cup close by ... where that came from, I'll never know! LOL!) I can see where the angle of this setup keeps you invisible. Very nice!

Love seeing your studio--we all have our special places for our shots. Tara has her ironing board, PJ has her garage and I have my stove top--your kitchen table fits right it!!

This isn't quite what I imagined, it's much more wonderful than that! Do you get many shots when it's raining or snowing? Answer to your question ..Yes! I do get scolded and Tom just thinks it's hilarious! LOL...I see you don't have that problem..way to go my friend!!!

Cool! What I like most is how sunny that deck is, as well as the fridge being so handy. I'd never guess you were shooting through glass, either. It's a great setup, and feeding the birds is cheep at the price.

So, that's your secret in collecting the fine captures you invariably come up with. Very interesting. Reminds me of the tactics the narcotics agents use when filming a drug deal going down.

Thank you for showing us how you have been getting these fabulous captures. I shall just have to try harder as your feeder looks to be about as far away as mine is but my little digital doesn't have the lens I'm afraid. Will have to hope father christmas comes early. You really have a great setup with the birds not being able to see you and you can have a quick cuppa while you wait for them to come.
