Description
The unification of park and garden was virtually completed by Lancelot “Capability” Brown (1715–83) by the simple expedient of making the garden into a park. His landscapes consist of expanses of grass, irregularly shaped bodies of water, and trees placed singly and in clumps. Unlike Brown the taste for the romantic and the literary led many to seek inspiration in the dramatic and the bizarre, in the remote past, and in remote, exotic places.
The home of the Dukes of Devonshire, Chatsworth House, Derbyshire, is one of the true treasure houses of Britain, set in extensive parklands beside the River Derwent. The park was landscaped by the 4th Duke (1720-1764), who engaged 'Capability' Brown to reshape the formal garden into the more natural one you see today. The 6th Duke developed a keen interest in gardening, and in 1826 he began a partnership with Joseph Paxton which was to create at Chatsworth the gardens you can see today.

These gardeners loving their gardens fulfilled wonders. A question which I often ask, it is the utility of these big plant walls edging ways well maintained as it is not felt peculiar feelings there of oppressiosn, while the plans of waters are as for them very bare, often signalled by fountains. Thank you for these splendid plates which you gathered artistically!
