Description

Agfa transparency film, scanned into computer using a general purpose scanner. I had intended uploading this picture with nothing other than slight adjustments to the brightness/contrast, but the bright areas on the upper cheek and forehead are burnt out as the dropper confirms with readings of 255, 255, 255. Attempts to adjust resulted in extreme yellow-green casts appearing around the bright areas. You’ll guess I wasn’t mightily enthused when faced with a combination of flesh tones and such colouring so the experiments began to regain control even if it meant straying from the original objective. We did eventually play with the brightness/contrast sliders, as we did with the sharpness of the picture and with a slight posterizing, but the critical moves to create a more tolerable colouring (quieter as befits a restful pose) came from a two-stage approach. We firstly used the slider dedicated to the “adjust colors effect,” to eliminate the greens. This resulted in the flesh turning a vivid purple but no matter for the “adjust selected colors effect” could now be used to dismiss the discord in favour of the present more representative tone. The essence of the design is retained but with an isolating drama – or such is the intent. Just remember I’m an old-fashioned guy and bring a deal of compositional baggage from my past interests in the amateur photographic scene. Cliff.
