Description

Agfa colour transparency film. Many years ago a fortnight’s holiday was spent in the West Midlands of the UK with my base in a village in Northamptonshire. I concentrated on viewing and photographing the many historical buildings in the area. The Church of the Holy Sepulchre in Northampton is rather special. It is a NORMAN round church and is modeled on the Holy Sepulchre in Jerusalem though it is much smaller in size. It was built for the first Earl of Northampton, Simon de Senlis, after his return from the First Crusade on or about the year 1100 AD. The eight piers which support the rotunda survive from Norman times but the building otherwise needed extensive renovation during the 19th century, and underwent necessary repairs about thirty years ago. The font is modern but the design is substantially copied form the 13th Century font in the cathedral of Hildesheim. Remnants of the original font survive in the church. Cliff.
