Description

Oil on canvas 16x20 inches This painting was fun to paint, however it was a bit of a challenge as I did not want it to look like an architectural rendering but rather I wanted it to have some of the charm and looseness that oils are typically known for. Ive done these sort of works in the past and have used watercolors/acrylics and have used ruling pens and airbrush extensively to create them, however that was'nt the look I wanted for this piece. By the way I re-learned a valuable lesson on this piece ..... when you work from a photo, the perspective gets distorted quite a bit, especially when dealing with 2point perspective which is the case in this image. Typically we accept this distortion as natural because we're so used to seeing photos and tend to believe the camera does'nt lie.... ie. If you were to lay a 2point perspective photo such as this onto a perspective grid , this phenomena becomes aparrent and light bulbs go off !!!! If your not famialier with perspective grids and are interested in drawing and learning perspective, do a google search for said item, I bought mine over 20 years ago and they were expensive back then (a full set comes with arial, birds eye, knee high, etc. the horizon line is up down and everywhere in between, as well as 1point, 2point and 3point perspective) I'm betting today they can be had for cheap!!!!! Lay one out on your drafting table and place a piece of tissue paper over it start doodling and have fun.... You'll amaze yourself ... They taught me a lot about perspective and seriously shortened the learning curve of the difficult mastery of perspective !!!!! I don't use mine anymore and am not sure where they are but they taught me so much and had forgotten all about them till I saw the distortion in this painting !!! I've started another painting that utilyzes the same perspective as this painting and intend to rework the photo in photoshop 5.5 using the skew tool/ perspective tool, it's a painting of the new library here in town, that I'll be donating to them, it allso will be a 16x20 oil. Greensleeves your observations about the eden painting, are stunning, the cloth and the snake are represented as one ... Well done !!! Wintorix as to your sight mail : No I' hav'nt been arrested, at least not in the last 11 years and the only reason that happened is some smartass from overseas called me Tim ;).... oops did I mispell your bloody name ? Ramethap ... did I scare you off with the last E-mail? I hope not!!! tom p.s. I sold this painting tonight p.s.s Hey by the way I finally got my website up and running, still got a lot of details to workout but at least I got images uploaded and the site works ...... www.thomasribbleart.com

Wonderful painting that has the charm and also the feel of a small town. You chose well by using a loose style. It fits. Congratulations, and I can understand why this sold so fast. It is beautiful.

Very nice and heartwarming - reminds one of a Norman Rockwell painting. Very nice!

This painting is excellent, capturing a piece of American history. Quite in the style of Norman Rockwell as NetWorthy says. The style is called Genre painting "pictorial representations in any of various media that represent scenes or events from everyday life." I hope we will see more such from Tom (or was it Tim?). One thing is sure; this painting can never be mistaken for a 3D rendering! haha Oh, how I wish I was a real painter! I was at the Modern Museet in Stockholm when Fernando Botero had an exhibition, and was visiting in person too. A long queue was waiting in line waiting for him to sign books with pictures of his work. Many beautiful women! The life of an artist is indeed enviable!
