Description

I snapped the shot at the quarry park. There were two of them swimming in the pond the waterfalls emptied into. After doing some research , I believe they were put there. This is what I found. Common Name Black Swan Scientific Name Cygnus Atratus They are large waterbirds which breed in Southwest and southeast Australia. The term swan is a common gender name. The males are called cob, the females pen, and the young ones cygnet. They are born white, turn brown, and then turn black as adults. I think these are younger ones. They are almost extinct and there were only 23 known breeding pairs as of 2008. This is why I think maybe the city of Montello put them there. Hoping to have a breeding pair. Their necks are relatively the longest amoung swans, and are s shaped. They have a bright red bill with a pale tip. Their flight feathers are white, and can only be seen while the bird is in flight. OMG!!!! get this their wing span is 5.3 to 6.5 feet. I am only 5 ft 2 1/2 inches tall! Both parents share the care of the nest. Like other swans, the black swan is largely monogamous, pairing for life (about 6% divorce rate) Thank you for looking. Thank you for all the wonderful comments on my previous post. I hope you enjoy this one. Your friend always, Cheri

Good heavens! I always pictured a black swan as just that: pure black, and not with the variety of textures depicted in this fantastic capture, Cheri! The long chain-mail neck and feather duster tail make for a bizarre combination, indeed. Also, love the various paisley-like colors, reflectivity and textures of the water. A really remarkable shot.

Wonderful capture! Very unusual swan (to me). It was nice of you to put the explanation with it, otherwise I'd have no idea about this fine bird. ;c)

Whoa, I realize that baby birds are among some of the most butt ugly creatures on earth, but in their defense, grow into some of the most beautiful of all living things. In addition, I'm pretty sure that all of us are familiar with the children's story of the ugly duckling, which later turned out to be a swan. I'm thinking that not only are these particular birds born ugly, they apparently stay that way!! To me it's no wonder there are only 23 mating pairs left, these guys probably take one look at each other and think to themselves "NO STINKIN WAY!!!" I don't think even tequila would be of any help here. I've often heard of the term the black sheep of the family,....quite often referring to me, but now, upon seeing a couple of these, perhaps being the black sheep isn't quite all that bad. I do have to admit that they seem to have a greater ability than ours, to stay in a relationship, on the other hand, perhaps they're thinking they're so lucky, just to be in one. Pretty cool shot sweetie, this really was an interesting and unexpected find!

The wild colors are a result of the reflections from the sky and the granite around the quarry walls.

Great capture and I've learned a lot from your narative. Elfin12u had some interesting points. The swan is great but the reflections in the water are awesome. Very well done Cheri. Dana

I love a good, fluffy swan...I've had a few experiences with them, but I won't go into the wonders of swan-spit. The light is gorgeous here and the textures are perfectly captured.

A perfect picture! Really fine shot indeed! Nearly extinct though? I an assuming you mean in 'that area', as according to the IUCN (International Union for the Conservation of Nature), there are 500,000 in the world and it holds 'no cause for concern'. Hope you don't mind that info. Could be a local concern regarding these beauties you have photographed! Top work.... Rob.
