Description

On our adventures Saturday about a block away from the turtle rescue site, Dave had shown me this park. He and his family would stop here when he was a boy. This is what I learned about it. The Montello granite quarry, opened in 1879, employed more workers and generated more income for Montello than any other single business. Montello red granite was used to build the tombs of U.S. Grant and Robert E. Lee, and decorates Wisconsin's magnificent State Capitol Building. The rapids that once provided the power to run the quarry machinery now form four sparkling waterfalls that cascade over granite outcroppings into the quarry that made Montello famous, and prosperous. The waterfalls and quarry can best be viewed from the Montello Granite Park, located on Hwy. 23 in Montello. - compliments of the Chamber of commerce for Montello Wi. Thank you for looking and all comments on my previous post, They mean a lot to me. Have an incredibly wonderful Day/ Night. Friends always, Cheri

I remember family trips as a kid, and coming through here. We always got to stop, and get out and stretch, this was about the halfway point between our home and where our family reunions were held. We snatched my mother again this weekend, and went to the huge flea market in Princeton. It had been a long time for me to have been in Montello, and pretty much the same for mom, seeing as how it was only about 10 more miles west, and Cheri had never been here, what choice really did we have? I was so tempted yesterday in Chreis' turtle post to say something about these falls, and now I still have to hold my tongue, because I know what else she got!

This is quite beautiful and it has such a sense of openness to it that I like, despite the fact that it's also intimate in many ways. I like quarries and the remains of them, I think it comes from watching too many classic episodes of Dr. Who and Blake's 7...for some reason the BBC figured that quarries made excellent, and cheap alien planets. Anyway, alien planets aside, this is a gorgeous photograph, and I'd love to have been there too. Great information as well.

There's something about an abandoned quarry ... maybe I've read too many mystery stories! This is just beautiful. Aside from the associations we all seem to have, the photograph is great! Lovely light, beautiful waterfall, and I love the texture of the rock.
