Description

When the Air-Raid siren sounded outside the Special Care Facility, attached to Elevator City General Hospital, Nurse Seil had her heart jump into her throat. She sprinted to her locker like an athlete, and jerked out the secret panel in the back. She pulled out her automatic pistol and snap-screwed the silencer into place. She loaded it and hid it under a towel on a wheelchair. She prayed like she really believed it all this time and ran to the far end of the facility. She shot around the lock and kicked the door in. She wheeled the chair to the last door on the hall. She wheeled it in and injected the patient there with enough stimulants to shake an elephant apart. Without waiting for the drugs to take hold, she dressed the woman and loaded her into the wheel-chair as quickly as she could. A nurse ran in as Seil went to open the door. Seil snap kicked the woman in the stomach, and then plastic-binded the woman and taped her mouth. She pushed the chair to the elevator, and used the special key from the downed Nurse. The woman in the chair moaned and stirred. "Big noise? Where're my socks?" Seil smiled at the confused woman and smiled. "We're going out to buy you more socks. The old ones are...LOST...I mean dirty and lost in the laundry." Seil checked her ammo and headed out onto the loading dock. She had one more camera to shoot so they wouldn't be seen. She stopped the chair and stepped out beneath it. The gun made two 'THUNK-THUNK' sounds, loud as a car door closing. The camera exploded with a sound like a gun-shot. Seil jumped and swore. The woman in the wheel-chair jumped and then laughed sleepily. "UH! YOU said a bad word!" Seil panicked and shoved the gun into the wheel-chair and started forward with a lurch as she forgot to release it's brakes. The stuffed animal the woman had had in her lap tumbled to the ground. The woman made an animal sound of need seeing her beloved toy tumble. Seil heard the sound of heavy running steps coming up. She picked up her gun and checked the ammo. She had three rounds left. Seil felt a cold sweat envelope her. She had only half-heatedly planned what she was now doing. She had forgotten more ammo. The orderly for the floor ran onto to the loading dock where Seil was at the top of the ramp to the parking lot where her car was parked. He shouted, "What's going on? Why are you taking this patient? Aren't you a candy-stripper or ? Seil managed a fake smile and a wave with her off-hand while hiding the gun behind her leg, and stuttered out, "HI! I'm doing what I need to be doing, and that camera blew up! Look! It's burning! If I wasn't taking care of a patient, I'd sound the alarm! Damnedest thing! Scared the pee out of me." He crossed his arms and looked up at it, which was sending up a small cloud of noxious smoke into the upper reaches of the bay. He looked and said,"What the hell? It blew up all right. Looks almost like ..." The woman sobbed, "I lost my Coodle! Gimme!" The sadness was like the death of all things, and they both turned to the sound of her voice. Seil said, "I'll get him, Toxic. Don't cry." The orderly said,"What've got behind your ...? Oh shit." Seil swung the pistol on him and held it with a pair of shaking hands. "For god's sake--do NOT make me shoot you! I'm taking this patient where she might be treated!" The orderly said carefully, "That is Aldus Panchetta's daughter. If you take her, you KNOW every police officer in Elevator City will hunt her and YOU down. This hospital has the best care for people like her..." Seil snapped at him, "NO. THEY DON"T. They didn't take her to people who might fix her. NO ONE knows what's wrong. I know someone who might help her." She tossed him her last binder. "Bind your wrist to the electrical conduit over there." He did. Seil scooped up the stuffed toy and handed it to Toxic, and pushed like all the devils in hell were after them both. Which they might be. --TO BE CONTINUED!--
