Description
Captured 5/25/09, at the beautiful Los Angeles National Cemetery in beautiful West Los Angeles, California.
More than 86,000 veterans, going back to the Civil War, are interred there.
A ZOOM is always recommended in this series.
Okay, next in the marching order was the United States Coast Guard, looking dapper and intensely focused in their impeccable blue uniforms. For some reason or another, these representatives appear much older than their active service counterparts. Several others, such as the Army and Navy marchers, look like they're right out of high school.
Also, take note of the Guardsman on the far right in the second photo. He's glaring daggers at me and appears to have broken ranks and is marching directly towards me. I haven't the foggiest why he would do such a thing. It couldn't be because I was taking their picture, because I was in good company with tons of other paparazzo in line with me. So why pick me out for retribution? Did he find out I was from Renderosity?
Tallyho.

I don't know, Harry, he has kind of a glint in his eye, like he wants to get to know you... I always liked the Coast Guard. Something nice about the thought of these folks patrolling watery boundaries for us. Great chapter in your Memorial Day series.

He was wondering why you at your age (youth that you are) weren't marching and was going to ask you until the guy carrying the Coast Guard flag next to him told him to snap out of it and get back in line! The other services have recruiting stations and reserve/guard units all over the place so they can send their young'uns to parades. It is possible these folks are all retired "Coasties" and are being used to keep the active duty folks on the water and in the ports. Sounds reasonable doesn't it (I'm guessing)?

The guy on the far left of the middle image is also out of pace... Or maybe he is the only one in pace... LOL... Great series Harry. :)

another fine montage from you Harry, with your usual sense of respect for detail, posture, the crease of the clothes, the interaction of flag & gun with the carrier, and facial expression. It's funny how that man singled you out; photography teachers would say, "that's what photography's about: The visual speaks a world all by itself." It's a great detail, esp after you point out that he was looking at you. And of course the montage moves from further to closer, so we wind up seeing the seriousness of the carriers at the bottom. It's amazing: Memorial Day was a while ago, but watching this series has made it live for many days, vividly so, and it's a small miracle because now it feels like it's 'everyday', and that makes some of us think about what it means all the more; like while everything else is happening, the ceremony of honoring all these people is still going on. This is a fine series. I'll be sorry when the last shot it posted...

Very nice set of images, Harry.... I have never seen the Coast Guard marching and those certainly are dapper uniforms they have! Great shots, and interesting series, Harry.
