Brad Pitt and I share the exact same birthday (month, day, year) outside of that, our stories diverge considerably. Mr. Pitt went on to become an internationally famous superstar, while I have led the much more interesting life of the starving artist. I come from a long line of storytellers (whose gift for gab stretches back through the mists of time to our native Ireland) and professional malcontents who were seemingly born to create something in the arts, be it music, writing, sculpture, painting, or photography. I started writing at age 12 with a screenplay with my cousin Ryan about a planet where everyone looked like Elton John entitled "Don't I Know You?" More screenplays followed, several of which received epic Super-8 production with budgets that sometimes ran up to $10. A few even had sound!  More writing followed: songs, poems, short stories, numerous unfinished novels, etc.. Somewhere in there was an attempt at being a rock star...
Still living at home, at age 22, my father dropped an elderly Nikromatt 35-mm film camera into my lap, in the hopes that I would "make a go of it" as a photojournalist. That didn't happen, but I did develop an abiding love of photography that along with writing and archival work have been among the chief passions of my life. When it comes to my photography, I try to be as creative as possible while at the same time striving for a documentary/archival quality. The only set rules I adhere to, when it comes to making pictures are: 1.) Try not to make the picture blurry, and 2.) Don't drop the camera.

Ooh, I was there...probably being completely oblivious to the fact that you were taking a picture, as I usually am oblivious on escalators. This is a great, urban-moody shot that captures that faux-sleek quality that the subway system has here. It's a bit like a strange interaction between multiple personality trapped in a single brain...it almost works cohesively, but not quite. As for the photograph itself, it's a delicious slice of urban life, full of gleaming light, shadow, and that sterile (but somewhat fetid) air. Great work.

Great shot, love the motion look here and the shine of the metal---gives it a real urban effect!!

LOVE the lights reflected on the metal sides of the escalator, and their less flashy counterparts on the tile walls. Cool shot!

lol, oh I know it's in chicago, I nearly lived there for a while! But boy do you bring back memories, because the approach 'to' the Art Inst. is all about dingy loop streets and sooty Els and these subway escalators...all to get to the insulated controlled environment of a major world museum w/ all its silence. Terrific capture of the glare & gleam of these metal escalators, those neon lights spreading all over, those garish tile walls & those yellow "warning" pigments on the stairs. And is that Chip on top? Or was he just saying he was unaware you were photographing, lol...In any case, it's a terrific capture of those crazy underground caves, and of the feeling of emerging out of a metal inferno as you make your way to the cloistered wholly-other world of a major museum. Thanks for all the time you put into your words, they always enlighten and set the mood...wonderful upload.

Shine shine shine! I love the reflections all around, and I can almost smell that public below-ground smell...a slice of city life!

Hey Corey, Great shot. What amazes me is how you got such good color. When you photograph under fluorescent lights your pics. usually have a green tint. Nice reflections.

That's a great shot! The others have mostly said it all, but it's good to know that you were off to somewhere really interesting!
