Description

Captured 5/25/09, at the beautiful Los Angeles National Cemetery in beautiful West Los Angeles, California. More than 86,000 veterans, going back to the Civil War, are interred there. A ZOOM is strongly recommended in this series. The top two fotos show World War II veterans, all decked out in their spick-and-span, knife-creased khakis, smartly displaying the flag and their banners, followed by the proud lone soldier in the bottom three shots, the very last of the marchers, clad in camouflage and packing heat. Yep, this is the last of the parading troops. After all this pomp and circumstance, what will I ever do for a followup? Tallyho.

A fine finish to the series; you can see the pride on the faces of these vets. I wonder about the story behind the lone camouflaged marcher... great shots!

Harry, I am trying to give you a good ID on the last marcher. Here's what I know...he's wearing the infantryman's blue shoulder loop (not unusual). He's wearing a Combat Infantry Badge (CIB) so he's been where the shootin' took place and then the emblem over his right breast pocket is from Korea. He looks like he made a career of the Army with all the ribbons on his left pocket flap. Can't tie it much more together with the exception of I think he's wearing the insignia of a Staff Sergeant on his collar. Wonder how he wound up last...well, somebody had to be last:-)

Harry, awesome finish to your series. Even though he is last, you can tell he is very proud to be marching.

there's something so wonderful about seeing these older veterans smiling, not out of disrespect for the solemnity of their memory, but out of some deep joy to be there & perhaps to remember the closeness they forged years ago. (My uncle speaks of the closeness of his comrades, and suddenly his whole demeanor lights up. It's quite moving.) It's a wonderful capture. And there comes the last guy—I read Bill's comment, who's given lots of fine commentary to this series—with real presence & dignity; and your back-shot shows the music of his outfit—showing that even in this staunch parade, there is a human being inside everyone of these uniforms, and the uniforms move as their owners do, with music, grace, and inner power. Wonderful series-within-a-series. Terrific work all around, truly.
