Description

This beauty has the Latin name of Impatiens Glandulifera Royle, but I have always known it as Himalyan Balsam. Some consider it a real nuisance. So it might be, but bumble bees thrive on it, and what is good enough for our lovely bumblers, is most certainly good enough for me. Also, contrary to what some "experts" say, I have seen no sign that having these flowers stops the bees pollinating our native species. Certainly the bees that visit my garden do a grand job of pollinating everything and Cornwall is alive with meadow flowers right now, more than I have ever seen, in fact. Beides, we have lost a fair number of bumble bee species over the last few years, so anything I can do to help them, I will. ^=^ It's reputation as the tallest annual plant to be found in the UK I can certainly believe, mine being over 3 metres tall. It does have to be closely kept under control as each plant can produce over 800 seeds! The seed pods literally explode and can send their contents 7 or 8 metres. As mine produce seed pods I cover them in small paper bags made from kitchen towels. It's easier than just cutting off each pod, or having to weed out hundreds of seedlings. Since inviting these flowers into the chaos which I call "garden" one of my favourite pastimes during the summer month's is watching the bumble bees visiting these flowers. They disappear right inside emerging seconds later covered in pollen. This year, for the first time, some of my plants are white. Why, I have no idea. Thank you taking the time to look. ^=^

Stunning macros!! I've not seen a white one before, either. I don't have these, too much to keep under control already. But I am planting more and more 'open-faced' flowers for my insects, and am seeing new critturs all the time!!

They certainly are gorgeous! I'm glad you're being careful to keep them under control. They're one of the top three invasive species in your country, last I checked, but they're so beautiful! Stay vigilant, and enjoy!

What a lovely flower it is, and I really like the description of this quite tall plant.
