Description

This posting ends Day 1 in Death Valley, California. I am near the lowest spot in the United States – Badwater Flats. Elevation minus 282 feet. That translates into 282 feet (85.5 meters) below sea level. The spring feed puddle behind me is the only open water in Death Valley. It is brackish water – high salt content and undrinkable, thus the name "Badwater". The white ring around the puddle is dried salt. There are tiny organisms in that puddle that can handle the salt and the heat, such as Pickleweed, tiny aquatic insects and the Badwater snails. Speaking of heat, please note how I am dressed in the hottest, driest and lowest point in the US. The shirt is flannel and I’ve hiked almost 10 miles. As I drove in that morning, there was snow on the “Welcome to Death Valley” sign. Go figure. I’m going to give you a break from Death Valley for a couple of weeks but I would like to came back to it later on. Photo taken in 1996 and some info came from Wikipedia. Thanks for stopping by, taking a look and for all your previous comments & favs. Dana

Wonderful shot! I have never stopped when I've crossed part of Death Valley. Always zoomed through looking for the other side, but then, I usually end up going through in summer. :-)

Thanks Dana for this posting. I haven't been to Death valley for years but my first assignment in the Army was Fort Irwin, CA...southwest of Death Valley in the Mohave high desert. That was an interesting two years for a young guy from New York.

That is VERY COOL, Dana! Have never seen this vantage point before. Really neat shot. Reminds me of the salt flats not far from Guadalupe Peak in SW Texas.
