Description

This is the last of this short series showing Damselflies. This is the only one of the four images posted that was taken with the 55-200mm lens. I was standing on my dock and looked down. I was surprised to see this male Ebony Jewelwing Damselfly fluttering directly below me. This is the first time I have seen one at the pond. I see them near the various creeks on my property but they like heavily shaded areas and the pond is fairly sunny almost all day. This opportunity allowed me to get a rather unusual POV. Side views are by far the most common view. It is also not common for these Damselflies to rest with their wings folded down like this. This one landed on a water plant and raised his wings straight up and together (as is the normal position they assume). He then would slowly lower them, hold them horizontal for a sec or two , then snap them back up quickly. He repeated this action several times and I managed to get this shot. It is not the greatest shot I have taken. Although Ebony Jewelwings are rather large for a Damselfly species, they are still a rather small critter and the 200mm lens can't focus close enough to get sharp details on something that small. BTW: the females have a white spot on the outer edge of the wings. Thanks to those who take the time to comment. Lee

You've got to be kidding me? That is the most unusual and beautiful damselfly I've encountered. The black of the wings with the polished luminescent body/tail...it seems it has a jewel on its back holding its wings one. Stunning.
