Description

Just before arriving at Bradburyton, O'Malley asked: "Can you tell me how that voodoo magic work, that one you performed on the RAT sniper, sir?" JS grinned: "It's a highly classified magic, and if I tell you it..." "After that, he'll have to kill you!" M'Buna concluded the sentence. All of them laughed, except a puzzled Eve, who couldn't understand Earthener humor at all. JS ordered M'Buna to send the RAT body to GOD henchmen ASAP, and O'Malley to reset the He-bot. Then he accompanied Eve to his lodgings to change her clothes. While going there Eve burst out: "So, this is the way you live, all this horrible things!" Usually these words were the opening sentence of judgemental people who functioned as judge, jury and hangman. So JS, put on the defense, muttered: "Someone has to do it." Eve felt his mood changing, so she went closer to him and cried: "No, no. I mean I didn't know you have to stand all this mayhem. And I was trying your patience with trifles. You're too good with me...". JS thought it was the first time he was accused of being good. Once at JS's lodgings, Eve went to take a shower saying: "It'll take 5 minutes". In these "5 minutes", JS managed to write a succint, but exhaustive, report for GOD, to have a meal brought to his place, and to speed up some red tape procedures. When Eve came out of the shower, saw her gauze dress and pronounced: "That stupid dress, I don't want it any longer! Where are my fatigues?" "To the laundry!" JS realized that the shower had washed off also her good intentions, so he gave her one of his tank top and gym shorts. "Give me 5 minutes for a shower", he told her. "Then, I'll accompany you to your home". When he came back some minutes later, he saw Eve sitting on the edge of the bed, sporting a mulish look. "What's the matter?" he frowned. "I don't feel like going home and being asked what happened. The others would want to know, and I can't speak about that yet. Can I stay here, please?" "Of course, no problem..." but Eve interrupted him, suddenly getting up and going closer to him jerkily: "Swear you'll help us! Promise that you won't allow them to kill us that way. We don't kill that way even a mad slugh!" She grasped his arm: "Swear to me that you'll teach us how to fight, to make war! Swear it!" JS looked at Eve. She was shivering with anguish and anger, her beautiful eyes brilliant with fury. JS embraced her tight and kissed her with hard lips. Eve wrapped her arms around his neck. She clung at him, hungrily, fiercely. They slid down on the floor as if their knees had buckled. At once, with maddening obstinacy, the interphone started flashing the signal of GOD's direct line call. JS broke the kiss summoning up all his willpower. "I must answer, he said huskily.
