Description

Tara (auntietk) is always showing us just a smidgeon of something. Taking that as my cue for this almost inhuman quiz, I present you with a tail wheel photographed at Dayton in the National Museum of the USAF. It is the tail wheel from what??? I'll post the answer sometime tomorrow, July 10th. Those of you who may have built models years ago probably have a leg up:-) Yes it was built in large numbers. Thanks for stopping by. Remember this is all Tara's fault! Bill:))) Added Hint: The manufacture makes cars today that are available for purchase in the USA and probably most other countries too.

A real hefty tail wheel. Looks like a tail light on the end. Your hint indicates a Japanese or Swedish model Okay, I'll take a chance and say this is a Mitsubishi A6M Zero-Sen. And, Tara has to knock off this mystery stuff.

Sandra suggests: KAWANISHI N1K2-JA SHIDEN KAI (GEORGE) (just to differ from F.)

Okay, Mr. Smarty-pants, here's your plane: Flavia was right, it's a A6M2 Zero (Thank heavens for Flavia, because otherwise I would have never found it!) At first I thought ... no ... but the color was a dead giveaway. :P I love the shot! The composition, the light and shadow, make for a great abstract. Ummm ... no Pitot tube back here, so I'm lost. Is that a little tail light or something?

If they build cars now, it's either SAAB or Mitsubishi. (BMW would seem like another guess, but I believe they only made the engines and not a whole aircraft.) Nor does it seem old enough to be from a Ford tri-motor. (A U.S. auto maker's only known entry into aviation that I'm aware of.) SAAB seems to be better known for their stuff from the early jet age, and this looks more vintage than that. So I'll go with the other guesses saying it's a Zero. (But then again, Mitsubishi made more aircraft models than that, so it could still be the right company and era but wrong aircraft.)

Looks like a WWII carrier based aircraft tailwheel to me. A quick check of my model shelf says I'll go with paulis75 on a Mitsubishi Zero type.

You could probably show the whole aircraft and most people here still wouldn't have any idea! I think Tara's baiting us!
