Description

Somehow I keep thinking I should have Ed McMahon doing his signature intro or something... Anyway, you guys have been really patient with me, so it's only fair that you get to see what all of the fuss was about. This is the current state of my "dragon scale armor" worn at the Silverleaf Renaissance Festival in Battle Creek Michigan. It was a bit scary, there was rain early in the morning, but things cleared off and we ended up with a very muggy 80+ degrees for the day. For those who might not have seen my earlier posts, this costume is worn by me, and nearly everything you see I made myself. The scales were made by sculpting an original in modeling clay, which was used to make a silicone rubber mold. then that was used to make over 850 of these scales, 825 of which were used to make the shirt portion I'm wearing here. All were hand-painted and hand-sewn to a backing fabric by myself, as well. The helmet is also my own creation, I embossed the leather by hand, wax-hardened it all and assembled it with the help of a friend. The front of the helmet also pivots, so that I can expose my face to eat/drink, etc. I also made the claws you can see (posted pics of them last year) the only things I didn't make are the pouches and the boots. It was a pretty successful day for me, I need to adjust how the weight of it rides on my shoulders a bit, but that's pretty minor stuff. I'm hoping to add more weapons and do some leggings with more of those scales, too. As if I don't have enough to do already? Hope you enjoyed looking as much as I enjoyed making it! Have a great weekend everyone.

Holy crap, Michael! This is totally mind-blowing!!!! LOVE it! I'd marveled over your previous work, but THIS?!?! No wonder you're dreaming camera flashes. Simply amazing, the amount of time, energy, patient, perseverance you've spent. The outcome though, was definitely worth it. It exceeded anything I could possibly have imagined from your previous descriptions. Hope you're as pleased with it every time you get to wear it, as we are getting to share the view. Geez, I'm still lost in all the details here. I need to look a little longer, for sure.
