Description

As captured from my backyard. The Pillars are part of Messier object M16 (also known as NGC 6611) in the constellation Serpens. This is a massive region of interstellar gas and dust and serves as a nursery for young stars. Imaged through a 16" Ritchey-Chretien telescope with an SBIG STL11000m camera and narrow-band filters. Assembled in Photoshop with the sulfur II filter mapped to the red channel, hydrogen alpha mapped to the green channel, and oxygen III mapped to the blue channel.

Spectacular photo! I wasn't aware that these objects were able to be photographed from Earth, and that the only photos of them were from the Hubble. Very nice work on the filtering to bring them out.

Very nice to see the whole neighborhood. The Hubble image always has that stepped shape with the corner missing.

I could only imagine what you might accomplish if they were to put you and your gear up there with the Hubble so that you didn't have to look through the Earth's atmosphere! Well done!
