Description

Vive le Québec libre ! (Long live free Quebec!) was a famous and controversial phrase in a speech delivered by French President Charles de Gaulle in Montreal on July 24, 1967. The slogan became popular among nationalists. It was particularly adopted by those nationalists supporting the economic and political modernization of the province, which had been lagging behind under the traditional semi-feudal elite connected with the Catholic Church. In fact, history belies the political myth of the traditional ties of Quebec with France. The truth was that these ties were severed for more of two centuries. France, with its revolution, liberal thought, free customs, and philosophical leadership was anathema for the Quebecker religious elites. After the so-called French and Indian War (Seven Years War in Europe)in 1760, the British victors and the Catholic Church in Quebec made a Mephistophelian deal. The Church was to enjoy the privileges they had under the French regime, their seigneuries recognized, and they would quell every serious effort of the French-speaking colonists to revolt against the British rule. Both parties respected the deal. The result was a lead lid on the Province, whose external cultural relations were only with the State of the Church, to which they sent soldiers. In 1870, when the Italian troops put an end to the State of the Church with their cannons, the last defenders of the Pope were French-Canadians and Swiss. You can see how serious was the cultural gap between the Quebeckers and the French from two things. First, they didn't produce any type of cheese until a few years ago when they started some local production to please turists. The French have hundreds of excellent types of cheese! The second is the symbolism of the flag of Quebec, which is connected with the Ancient Regime and the Catholic church, not with the French revolution as many European national flags. The flag of Quebec, called the Fleurdelisé and referred to as the national flag, was adopted for the province by the government of Quebec, during the administration of Maurice Duplessis. It was the first provincial flag officially adopted in Canada, first shown on January 21, 1948, at the Parliament Building in Quebec City. The Fleurdelisé takes its white cross from the ancient royal flags of France and its white fleurs-de-lis and blue field from a banner honouring the Virgin Mary reputedly carried by French-Canadian militia at General Louis-Joseph de Montcalm's victory at Carillon (now Ticonderoga, New York). Contrary to popular belief, the fleurs-de-lis are not taken from the banner of the kings of France, who used golden fleurs-de-lis. The white fleurs-de-lis on Quebec's flag are symbols of purity, which originally represented the Virgin Mary. The flag on the rock was taken at Pont-Rouge on the Jacques-Cartier River. Thank you for your kind comments.

Live and learn :-) Ninety five percent of what you've written is new to me. I always come away from your postings with something new. Looks like the flag on the rock could use some new paint to brighten it up:)
