Description
This one was taken on the Richelieu river, at Chambly, where there were some rapids, even if in general this was considered a 'good' river. The Richelieu River flows from the Canadian shores of Lake Champlain about 171 km (106 miles) north, ending at the confluence with the St. Lawrence River. Formerly also called Iroquois River, its French name comes from Fort Richelieu, which in turn was named in memory of Cardinal Richelieu (1585-1642). The French explorer Samuel de Champlain was the first European to reach the mouth of the river in 1609. Already an important pathway for the Iroquois Indians, it soon became one also for the French. who built forts along its length: Fort Richelieu, Fort St. Louis (or Chambly), Fort Ste. Thèrese, Fort St. Jean, and Fort Ste. Anne. The Chambly Canal (9 locks) permits boats to bypass the rapids at St-Jean-sur-Richelieu and Chambly.
The Iroquois used it to raid Lachine and Montreal, as well as to attack the Indians who brought their furs to the French forts in the 17th century. Later, in the 18th century, the pro-British Mohawks from New York used the Richelieu river to trade with the pro-French Mohawks at Caughnawaga, today known as Kahnawake, opposite to Montreal on the St. Lawrence river.
I've made just a little postwork to enhance the 'feeling' of the wind. Thank you for your kind comments.
