Description

When I was a kid, top among my heroes were the Mercury Seven astronauts. I followed the Space Race every mile and 40 years ago Monday, I remember watching Neil Armstrong step onto the moon. I've seen the footage many times since then, but my clearest memory of the live moment was seeing Walter Cronkite take his glasses off and chuckling in amazement. Speechless. There has been a lot of looking back since the news the Walter Cronkite passed away yesterday. I've watched much of it. It made me realize that when I think about the all the big and historical events I have seen in the first half of my life, the voice I hear is Walter's. JFK's death, the nightly numbers killed in VietNam, the Civil Rights Movement and most all those Space shots. All narrated with the same baritone voice of The Most Trusted Man In America. What a great long life he had and how lucky we were to have had him. I've thought of Cronkite regularly over the years. When I just want to watch the news on tv and have to wade through through all the opinions and fluff and "info-tainment" stories, I wonder if Walter would have covered a high speed car chase for two hours. I wonder if Walter Cronkite would have told us that Britney wasn't wearing panties. I even remember watching his straight-forward political coverage at conventions and elections and I never knew which way he leaned. Imagine that. Ah, the good old days. ....And that's the way it is.

Wonderful tribute! We share the same memories and longing for the good old days of reporting, I'm tired of hearing about some of the things considered "news" these days. Guess I'm getting old, lol

Walter was one of the last to report the news - not spin the news.

You've expressed visually and in words exactly how I feel about it. I used to watch news religiously but anymore it is just gossip and about half of it is the kind of gossip that I don't tolerater very well.

Wonderful tribute and thoughts. Agree with you whole heartedly...mind numbing "same 'ol" hour upon hour from plastic, smiling talking heads.
