Description

These are from my hometown Chicago. Years ago I took sketchpads into the streets & drew everything I could get my eyes on! These were from one week in the late 80s. They are: 1. Islamic ornament on a temple. Based on medieval designs. (All ink.) 2. A tree carved in a wall. I drew it in loud ink, pasted it onto fabric (!) and---you ready?---photo-statted it! (Remember photo-stats?) It was used as a greeting card. 3. An old ink-drawing of a cathedral, which I scratched & rubbed with alcohol to make it look like an 'aged etching'. (Yep, whatever works!) It used to be in my gallery. 4. An ink-drawing of a Chicago building: It's still in my gallery, but since it was done the same week as the others, it's here. The ink-works took forever, but you learn a world from sketching like this...

Photo-statted--how bout mimeographs--omg, were THEY a pain in the you-know-what!!! Each of these speaks for itself individually and as a group, gadz, does that even make sense?? I love the thought of you wandering around the city, sketch pad in hand, getting these wonderful images, preserving history in your own special way. The bottom one looks very much like a building not far from me, so it gets my fave vote!! The middle one, the tree--you threw it in just to throw me off, right?? I worked!! Great work, Mark!!

OH look there!! I am thrilled. As I am a big fan of your drawing, this is pure delight to my eye. Look at these wonderful details on the first two peaces. So amazing. I love the rough way you have drawn the old tree. It looks fantastic. The next is so detailed too. It must have taken ages to finnish, not to mention the super wonderful last one. I am indeed in love with that. SUPER, Mark. Thanks for sharing these wonders with us.

That bottom one could so easily be one of mine, only it's a lot better! I veer back to drawing buildings so easily; they keep fairly still, they age mainly slowly so you can go back a year later and they are more or less the same, given the odd ball and chain job, and they never seem to lose patience with the speed at which you work. Love them all, you are a constant source of surprises, Mark!

There is wonderful detail in these, with a grand touch of whimsy and loads of heart. It shows how much you love art (and art loves you) and your tender feelings for your hometown. I have never seen Chicago displayed so intimately. CC

Really lovely works, I used to draw also, but I changed all my tools for digital ones! I also like the last one more but it's nice when you put them all together like this ;O)

Mark first of all I'm so sorry to hear that your hard drive died last night and I do hope you didn't lose too much. As for these images thank you so much for taking us on this journey down memory lane my friend. First of all the Islamic Ornament is amazing and I can't get over the detailing here. Any idea what it stands for ? The tree really is amazing and has such a distinctive look. I barely do remember the phot stat machines but haven't heard their name in years and have forgotten what they did exactly. I also love the ink drawing of the cathdral as it has such a aged appearance just as you strived for. Finally the drawing of the building is superb and I can tell you captured every detail you could while making it.

On opening this page I was instantly transported, time portal style, back into the Middle Ages, with these elegantly created sketches, Mark! Lots and lots of dedicated effort, time and talent went into these five peerless drawings, my friend.

I counted 5 but whos counting .. lol Beautiful work, I love how they are all done from your area, I would have love to be there in person to watch you in action, would love to see you do some of the fountains down by the water front, they were stunning to see. Hmmm someone is about to number 200 way to go my friend.

They may be old to you but brand new to us...what a treat. I had never considered the amount of time involved in an ink drawing...a closer look tells me why. Wonderful. tennesseecowgirl has tipped us off...200th upload coming:)

A wonderful insight as to why your freeform art works so well - you have a stunning eye for detail. And marvelous technical skills. And great compositional skills. And..... I think you get the picture! (head bowed in awe....)

Well done. All need a loooong look to see the intricacies of each line and curve. The one of the cathedral looks like an aged b&w photo the way the soft light seems to shine through. very cool. The detail is just amazing. The loud tree is awesome!! Perfect punch for this grouping.
