Description

Dustin Shuler’s work of art, “The Spindle” (a giant shish-kebab of mostly 1970s cars) was controversial from the moment it was erected in the parking lot of Cermak Plaza Shopping Center, in Berwyn, Illinois, in 1989. Although polarizing, the sculpture became iconic after being featured in the 1992 comedy hit, Wayne’s World. Tourists would come from all over the planet to photograph it. Over the 18 years of its existence, however, the elements were not kind, and by the summer of 2007, when this photo was taken, the cars had deteriorated to the point that the sculpture’s long-time enemies convinced the city of Berwyn that the artwork was an eyesore and should be dismantled. It was, later that year. I, personally, was sad to see it go.

I would have been sad to see it go, too. Can you imagine being the prior owner of one of these cars? It would be like ... immortality or something! I'm glad you took this picture, and saved it so we could see.

Oh yeah, it is very sad this would be removed. It's the perfect statement for 70's automotive excess (I think maybe the 59 Cadillac was the only car that was bigger!!)--great shot, Corey!! And I SO hope you'll be there when Tara and I arrive on the scene!!!

Wasn't this in commercials as well? I remember it from a few non-Wayne's World references. Hmmm...Son of Svengoolie? At any rate, I love this! The POV is great. Most times you only see it from a straight-on perspective and you don't really get a sense of it's real size. This is a great shot.
