Description

The USS Constitution is a wooden hulled, three masted, heavy frigate of the US Navy. Named after the Constitution of the United States of America by President George Washington, she is the oldest commissioned naval vessel afloat in the world. Constitution, launched in 1797, was one of the six original frigates authorized for construction by the Navel Act of 1794. These frigates were designed to be the Navy's capital ships, and so Constitution and her sisters were larger and more heavily armed, than the standard frigates of the period. She was built in Boston, Massachusetts. Her most famous era of naval warfare was the War of 1812, against Great Britain, when she captured numerous merchant ships and defeated five British warships: HMS Guerriere, Java, Pictou, Cyane and Levant. The battle with HMS Guerriere earned her the nickname of "Old Ironsides" since the British cannon balls seemed to bounce off her redwood sides. She has served as a training ship for the United States Navel Academy and was retired from active service in 1881 and was designated a “museum ship” in 1907. She continues to be stationed in Boston. The Bunker Hill Monument was built to commemorate the Battle of Bunker Hill. The 221-foot (67 meter) granite obelisk was erected between 1827 and 1843 in Charleston, Massachusetts. There are 294 steps to the top. The Bunker Hill Monument is actually not on Bunker Hill but instead on Breed’s Hill, where most of the fighting, in the misnamed Battle of Bunker Hill, actually took place, during the British Siege of Boston. The monument was erected to commemorate the first major conflict between British and Patriot forces in the Revolutionary War, fought there June 17, 1775. "Don't fire until you see the whites of their eyes”, it said to have been shouted as the British forces marched to take the hill. Really nice POV. Notice how the surrounding architecture is also 'dated' and not some modern glass/steel monstrosity. Adds to the overall feel.

A great picture Dana. We visited the Constitution years ago and somehow I missed seeing the obelisk. Can't figure out how I did that:) This really looks good at the zoom level.

Nice. Do you have any detailed photos of Constitution? I am always looking to collect any with any angles of anything on her, for my own research into building her in 3 D....
