Description
Edward Sheriff Curtis took over 40,000 photographic images from over 80 Native American tribes. It looks that at least a number of tribespeople nicknamed him Shadow Catcher. Many biographers write that they called him this way because they could see the photographic process at work, transforming an impression into an image. However, since many tribespeople believed in multiple souls, probably they meant that Curtis caught that part of a soul which is a shadow, or a ghost.Yet,they did not object at being photographed by him. Instead, they even made a film with him.
The label Shadow Catcher has stuck in the photographic field. Now I'm wandering: is it the photographer catching the 'shadow-soul' of its object? Can I say that, on the contrary, it's the photographer that gives soul substance to the photographic object through her/his vision?
This is the first of a small series, following Jocko500's lead. Maybe it's too hot to be of a philosophical mood: if this is the case, I apologize ;D).
Thank you for your kind comments.
