Description

That's bmac62 and debbielove to be exact. Captured back on 10/26/08 at the Auto & Copter Expo held annually at the beautiful Armed Forces Reserve Center in beautiful Los Alamitos, California. The Skyraider, this particular one the darling of the air show circuit, features the folded wings that everyone likes so well, and I'm entranced by that bomb display. I have no pertinent information on the shapely but destructive ordnance adorning the wings. For the aviation buffs: The Douglas A-1 (formerly AD) Skyraider was an American single-seat attack bomber of the 1950s, 1960s and early 1970s. A propeller-driven anachronism in the jet age, the Skyraider had a remarkably long and successful career well into the space age, and inspired a straight-winged, slow-flying, jet-powered successor which is still in front line service today, the A-10 Thunderbolt II (Warthog). It was operated by the United States Navy (USN), the U.S. Marine Corps (USMC) and the United States Air Force (USAF), and also saw service with the British Royal Navy, the French Air Force, and the Air Force of the Republic of Vietnam (VNAF), among others. The piston-engined A-1 was designed during World War II to meet requirements for a carrier-based, single-seat, long-range, high performance dive/torpedo bomber, and was a follow-on to earlier dive bombers and torpedo bombers used by the Navy such as the Helldiver and Avenger. Though the Skyraider was produced too late to take part in World War II, it became the backbone of United States Navy aircraft carrier and United States Marine Corps (USMC) strike aircraft sorties in the Korean War, with the first ADs going into action from the USS Valley Forge with VA-55 on 3 July 1950. Production ended in 1957 with a total of 3,180 built. However, in 1962 the existing Skyraiders were redesignated A-1D through A-1J and later used by both the USAF and the Navy in the Vietnam War. Performance * Maximum speed: 322 mph (280 kn, 518 km/h) at 18,000 ft (5,500 m) * Cruise speed: 198 mph (172 kn, 319 km/h) * Range: 1,316 mi (1,144 nmi, 2,115 km) * Service ceiling: 28,500 ft (8,685 m) Armament * Guns: Four 20 mm (0.79 in) M2 cannon * Other: Up to 8,000 lb (3,600 kg) of ordnance on 15 external hardpoints including bombs, torpedoes, mine dispensers, unguided rockets, or gun pods. Source: Wikipedia encyclopedia. Imagine what damage this one would have inflicted on the Japanese fleet at the Battle of Midway in WWII? No contest! One more collage on this rugged bird tomorrow. Tallyho, and toodles.

Really great shots Harry! It's amazing those aircraft were loaded with bombs and now a days they probably carry only a few. Love this collage!

IIRC, one of these scored a MiG or two during the Vietnam War.

You can call it a Skyraider, I'm just going to call a SPAD a SPAD. Sorry, couldn't resist. I owe my life to one of these babies. This was close air support baby!Pity I can only give it a 5, it deserves at least a ten

Wonderful shots, Harry; it's a bit frightening to see all those bombs lined up there, but it's a lovely plane nevertheless!

amazing shots Harry, I've never really seen all the ways these planes could move and be maneuvered, and your shots of the wings opened and the gears & workings where the wing splits are amazingly strange to the untrained eye and amazingly complex. The bombs high in the air are visually stunning, and it lets us see (esp. zoomed) how they were actually attached. And your first shot gives a real view of the sheen & color of the beast, as the last shot does its sweep and stout stature. I already viewed the next shot (& will comment presently), but both of these are amazing. A very full & fine montage. They're very powerful.

Visually stunning collection, what a superb collage. You know how they say some cars 'look fast, standing still', well this plane just shouts at me 'I'm a war bird and I'm gonna get ya!'
