Description

"Really, JS, we must speak!" Eve cried. "Immediately, or you can wait until the evacuation is over?" "Yes, I mean, when we have carried everybody away. But soon!" JS nodded: "Check that everybody's on board, and most of all that nobody goes back to look for something". Eve watched him bustling around fixing wires, and grinned: "Re-furnishing?" JS grinned back: "A welcome present for the RATs. They'll fly directly to their Great Sun!" The evacuation went on rapidly and efficently. When the last ranch was empty and "refurbished" everybody heaved a sigh of relief. They'd managed it! Once again in the op room, JS listened to update intelligence. "RAT dropships are taking off from the area of the mines in BC1. Two of them've just landed in BC3 and BC11". "Tune in to RAT frequency 375", JS told the operator. After a few seconds, they heard a frenzy of RATs'shrill chirrups, mixed with some Rogue low growls. JS cried: "They unwrapped our gifts, but they didn't like the surprise!" A shout welcomed the news and everybody slapped his/her neighbour's shoulder. "Check their movements," JS said. "Eve, come with me to my office!". They had just opened the office door, that the interphone croaked: "The President on the direct line, sir!" JS looked at Eve ruefully. "I'm going to the Martian town to check whether everything runs smoothly. I'm back later," she announced, and slipped away. "Sir?" JS began quizzically as soon as the screen showed him a clearly distressed President. "OMG, I promoted you, I trusted you, and you...you... you started a war, and a few weeks before elections!" JS tried to resist the Great Man's emotional flood, to no avail: "I know, GOD told me," said the President. "But a bunch of Martian oaves are not the same as if an Earthener... I mean, yes they have the same value for me, you understand me... but not for the public opinion. They're not of the same value. They're crucifying me. The opposition encourages hotheads and troublemakers. Look! They've arrived even here!" The President pointed at the porthole. Then he added petulantly: "And at the GUN Council the Rogues have portrayed you as a criminal. And our media are covering it only to flagellate me. We must retreat from NM, so the Doves will quiet down... and ETHIC too!" Finally JS managed to interrupt the beleaguered leader's monologue: "They killed two of us. GOD's people will react badly if we retreat with our tail between our legs! And we are tax-payers and voters, too! What do you think the public opinion will react, when the RATs will start the wholesale slaughter of innocent people?" "Do you think I don't know it?" replied the other with a shrill voice. "What a mess, whatever move I make, I'll lose votes!" "If I may, sir..." JS uttered suavely, and at the Great Man's nod, went on: "Your administration may donate all the military equipment to the legitimate government of NM as a sign of friendship. Therefore, the Earthener personnel will be made only of counselors, and we'll have the control of Bradburyton for 10 years. Our personnel will perform only training and advisory tasks, and will use weapons only for self-defense". The President mused on this proposal a few seconds: "Yes, it may work. But don't forget we must NOT be involved in actual fight!" JS replied: "I promise that neither soldiers nor vehicles with Earthener insignia will engage the enemy, sir!" First, let me say this is a must zoom. Second, I am always impressed with the amount of detail and thought you put into your artwork. Just wonderful. Love the composition of this one especially. When you zoom on this you see so much going on. And as always, wonderful story to go with it. Bravo! Keep up the great work.

Lots of politics here, and true to life. (It happens everyday, here in the States.) You start out with quick preparations, more fast pacing, and what looks like it will be a private moment between JS and Eve (we hope), when they're interrupted once more by---this time---sheer Machiavellian politics. Realpolitik. And you also wove in a fine moment where JS's booby trap exploded on the invaders. Nicely included, done quickly and effectively. Something very ad hoc about it, and it worked perfectly. The long political speech is typical of political fare, all expediency and strictly what's right for the leader. It includes what appears to be a compromise at the end, to make the president happy. It has shades of the Bush administration and the protests against his war (though, with Bush, he went in anyway, over the screaming protests of so many around the world). And it ends with an agreement which, I assume, will not be kept in future episodes. I assume...I haven't gotten there yet, of course. The image is one of your highly elaborate ones, filled with mysterious detail and that wonderful glimpse into the president's world. First, the president looks like someone out of The Great Gatsby (I rarely see Obama in a pin striped suit!), and I love the urn, and the carpeting, and the lady in scuba equipment holding a "why die for New Mars" sign---very well done! And of course the city, like sunken Venice, in the background. (I assume those are Venetian details.) All this on a screen where it appears you have either reflections in the image, or light from the room that JS is in... Then JS's room---a dark dingy steampunk place, with lots of fascinating military-like detail, lots of nooks and crannies, filled with metallic detail where we're not sure what it's all for, but it looks like it's for something important. And the insignia (MA071, MA-72), and what appears to be drawers or vaults under the screen, and bits of bright peach-red and gold to set off all the dark greens, etc. And it's another angled image, with the peak of the angle where the screen begins. And a porthole looking into huge skyscrapers in the background (far left, in that salmon-pink hue). Your brighter hues are often in fine contrast to your darker, dingier hues. You do that very well. It's an amazingly complex image, and very well done. I get the feeling that some of your images take you much more time than your written portion---not that the written portion isn't complicated, and doesn't take time, etc, but that the image involves a number of steps and considerations that several written episodes would demand. This image is wonderful, Flavia, worthy of the upload itself. And it's got real humor too. Flavia, I'm at 2 hours now, and I realize I only commented on 7 uploads--- 6 of which were your writing. But at least you know I put a lot of time and thought into them. I did go to the most recent uploads, and read a few (in detail) to see if I could comment on them: But without all the background before them, I'm kind of out to sea with them. Which is why I'm still back in---let's see, August of 2009! Mea culpa. But I enjoy every bit of these journeys with your work, and I'm amazed you've kept this up for so long, and over so many episodes. The storylines just keep unfolding, with new characters, new encounters, etc. And your imagery keeps coming, some of it highly complex, and all of it done with panache, fine detail, and always great touches of humor. Very fine work. I will try to get back here before 6 months. Keep in mind I'm gone half the weeks, in between (I mean, gone from RR). But I'll try! It was a pleasure. And a fav for it all. Wonderful work.
