Hoooray.... it's the race day, (Every year on second Saturday of August), the 57th Nehru Trophy Boat race. ( After the drill the boats are moving towards the starting point-1400M. Title is from the traditional boat song) On this day all roads are towards Alleppey. This is the Biggest day of Alleppey in the Year. And the whole Country looks towards this little town to watch the most spectacular Boat race in the World.Although there are other races as old as 450 years, this is the most famous prestigeous race named after India's first Prime MInister Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru.The first race was conducted to honour him when he visited Alleppey. He was thrilled to see this unique water sport. Breaking all the securities He jumped in to the winner boat and danced with them. He couldn't forget the event, that he send a silver made replica of snake boat to the winner inscribed on it was "To the winners of the boat race which is a unique feature of community life in Travancore Cochin." ( at that time Alleppey not formed)Interestingly with him was his daughter Indira and grandson Rajive two future Prime Ministers of India . Thus the presence of Mrs Sonia Gandhi as the cheif guest was historicaly important in this race.She is the most powerful and influencial woman in Asia.An Italian born she won the heart of the Prince of India's most respeted and famous family ,the 'Gandhi' family as well as the many million hearts of this country. We realy love her. I shall continue this series covering the whole event with video for the interested.( I remember the previous promise. Shortly I shall do it)
