Description

There were 16 Snake boats to participate in this race. Besides Snake boats there are other kinds of boats for the race between its on kind. All such boats were once naval vessels of Alleppey including Snake Boats( Chunden Vallam) - fighters, Iruttukuthy- for spying specialy used during night , Veppu- cooking, supplying food and Churulan (means spiral) because of its look. Boats are moving towards the starting point. At this point no one can predict who the winner is. Its no easy win. But as I was going through my collection I found the Winner in this shot standing tall at the top . Isn't it interesting . His name is Achankunju, captain of the Chambakulam Boat., the same boat I showed when it launched. It was rowed by Jesus Boat Club. This is their second win in the season. There are about a dozen of races at various placed. Each one has a history or legend connected with it.These races are also an expression of our communal harmony between all religions and casts. The first race Chabakuylam boat race is based on a Hindu legend. But it is the Chabakulam Church that has the major role in conducting the race.
