Description

A NOAA research ship is warned off while monitoring sonar trials by the newly outfitted USS Enewetak Atoll. Known to its crew simply as "the 'Atoll" or sometimes the "Dragon Palace" (in honour of its large force of modified MH-53 Sea Dragon helicopters), the Enewatek Atoll was built around the hull of a mothballed Tarawa-class Amphibious Assault Ship. The new "spy ship" is fitted out to support the NOUS program (Navy Orbital and Undersea Instrumentation Ship). To be eventually based at Okinawa, the type has been steeped in controversy because of the threat posed to marine mammals by its massively powerful sonars. Officially, its role is to track, locate and neutralise spent ballistic missiles and various kinds of restricted space junk. Its actual duties are of course highly classified. The modified Tarawa-class Assualt ship and the helicopter prop blur object were modelled in Shade 7LE. The Research ship is from Amazing3D. The CH53 Sea Stallion is a free download from gfx-3D. The two ships were rendered on a water terrain in Bryce 6.1. That render was imported into Poser 6 as a background and the Sea Dragon and its prop blur rendered over it. Post-work in Painter 8.
