Description
There are 58,260 names on the Wall. It rained the first day I visited. The drops looked like tears on the granite face.

An old friend and fellow photographer once said to me, while we were in Paris out shooting together, "You know how you tell the difference between photographers and tourists? ... When it starts to rain the tourists put their cameras away." I was moved by both the image and your observation about how the raindrops appeared. Slowly I read downward, trying to finish the shortened names and to possibly imagine faces they belonged to. The spell was broken when I read the final name. Lit and cropped as it happens to be, it struck an ominous tone within me. They tell us art is supposed to move us; it is of no consequence in which direction, just that a work moves us.
