Description

The Sovereign's Orb is a type of regalia known as “globus cruciger” and is one of the British Crown Jewels. It was created for the coronation of King Charles II in 1661 at a cost of £1,150 — approximately $250,000 (£130,000) adjusted to today’s currency values. The Orb is a hollow gold sphere (representing the world) weighing 42ounces and about 6.5 inches (16.5cm) in diameter. Around the center is a band of pearls and gemstones. There is a similar half-band running across the top half of the Orb. Atop the Orb is an amethyst surmounted by a Cross. The Orb is a religious symbol; it represents the Monarch's role as ”Defender of the Faith” and as “Supreme Governor” of the Church of England. During a coronation, the Archbishop of Canterbury delivers the Orb to the Monarch's right hand. The Orb is then placed on an altar, where it remains for the remainder of the ceremony. At the end of the ceremony, the Monarch holds the Orb in the left hand, the “Sceptre with the Cross” in the right hand, and wears the Imperial State Crown as he or she leaves Westminster Abbey. This photo was taken in the spring of 1990 at the Edmonton Mall. some information from Wikipedia Thanks for stopping by, taking a look and for all your previous comments. Dana

Beautiful shot, Dana; and my Monty Python twisted mind saw the thumb and immediately thought "The Holy Hand Grenade of Antioch"! I'm afraid my brain has been irretrievably warped... :)

Although I sympathise with Ronnie's view I know half of the English population would agree. There are however two sides to everything and could argue that this "crap" brings a heck of a lot of people to London contributing to the tourist economy! yet personally I could take it or leave it! excellent photo Dana!

"Bring forth the holy handgrenade of Antioch" Sorry but this Crown Jewel always reminds me of a scene from the 'Monty Python and the Holy Grail' movie! Great capture Dana, well done.
