Description

Some Dragonflies require very very close observations to determine their species (that includes some males but especially females). Some can be recognized as far away as they can be seen. The males of this species fall into the latter category, lol. It is hard for me to say which species I like the best but Widow Skimmers are near the top of the list. Not only are they photogenic, but they also perch frequently and more often than not, they return to the same perches often. This (along with the fact they they tolerate a fairly close approach) make them ideal subjects. I have dozens and dozens of shots of them. For those who missed yesterday's posting (and considering the number of views it got- there are lots who missed it, lol), I will re-mention that I am posting an entire weeks worth of male Dragonflies. A different species each day. This was number 2. In response to a question from durleybeachbum (who did see yesterdays shot), my guidebook indicates there are 65 recorded species in my area and 13 more whose range is shown as being very very close. I have captured images of the males of about 20 of these species and have seen about 3 species more but have not gotten a usable image of them. I have not managed to get female images of some species nor have I even seen the females of some species. Thanks to those who take the time to comment. Lee

An exquisite creature and a superb shot! Thankyou for the info, Lee, how fabulous to have that many species! we only have 52 species of Odonata in the British Isles, only 38 of which have established breeding populations.
