Gardens here in Italy are always fenced and sometimes are guarded by serious obstacles. Close to my favorite pastry shop, where we (Flavia and me) go for a sweet breakfast cum aperitif and reading of the local papers on Sundays, there are two Liberty villas. They were built in the early 20th century and belong to some well-off family. Probably some wealthy doctor, since the hospital is at a spitting distance and in this neighbourhood live many doctors and university professors. Both villas have tall hedges to hide the garden, but taller rose trees gloriously managed to evade restriction. I took this one last spring, when the roses were at their best.
