Description

For reasons far too complex and numerous to go into now, I've been forced to move from my apartment in Edgewater, to the far, far, far south side of Chicago. My friend, Helena, helped me to move, and I took this picture from the seat of her car as we were zooming away from the North Side of city to the southern, nether regions. This picture was made on Lake Shore Drive (LSD for those in Chicago) in the side mirror of a 1991 Mercury Grand Marquis, on August 9th, 2009.

WOW! Well, I knew about your move and as I said then, I'll repeat: Welcome to the rectal sphincter of Chicago! Okay, maybe its not that bad...it's a bit more small intestinal than actually hard-core...um...well never mind! Anyway, this is a great shot, and it captures wonderful details INSIDE the car as well as outside. It has that kind of Bug on a windshield feel that works really well in some genre of photography with a French name that translates to "Bug on the Windshield" style of photography. The French, you know, have names for every genre of art out there! Great contrasts, and I particularly like the way the buildings seen directly outside are somewhat more fuzzy and less defined than those seen through the actual back window. Chicago is SO like that!

There was a time in my life when I moved about every couple of months. From the time I moved out of my mom's house till I moved where I am now, I was never anywhere for more than 9 months. I know about moving, but I sure never thought to record it this way. The only good thing about moving that much is everything I owned could fit into a VW Bug. You could cram a LOT of stuff into one of those damn things!! Great shot, Corey, it does give all kinds of different POVs all at once!!

I love all the different views in this shot. I've never been able to get a side-view mirror shot that didn't have me IN it, so I'm totally impressed with this!

This is totally cool! Ditto on what's been said about the POV. Great capture!

SO stressful! I don't do moving...but I admire those who can move in a carload or two. I should need a fleet of articulated lorries. A strangely compelling pic, not least because we drive on the left so this image has an almost subliminal danger inherent in it. Best wishes, Corey, in your new home.

Moving alone just sucks,...an unplanned move, based on reasons far too complex and numerous to go into now, completely bites the big one!! (I've never figured out what that remark really means, but it has an incredible suckish sound to it). I've been to the south side of Chicago, not an area I would be readily willing to go back to without a small personal army dedicated to just watching out for me. Of course we were just foolishly driving around at that time, and didn't realize where exactly we were, until we were pretty deep in. I'm sure that being complete strangers, didn't help our situation much, we didn't live there, and we didn't belong there either,.....and that fact was made incredibly obvious. I'm hoping that at least a few things have changed over the last 15 years, Take good care my friend, I'm sorry for the unfortunate circumstances leading up to this moment!
