Description

This is the porch of one of the twin Liberty villas, that with a painted wall. I have no idea why one of those guys is blowing a trumpet, or why the two horses are positioned that way.It looks like an episode from a fairy tale. The stone balustrade has an interesting ornament, the pine cone. This is a very old ornament, that can be seen in Ancient Egypt, Greece, Rome and among the Etruscans, but it's also part of the Celtic and Germanic cult of the trees. The pine cone was a symbol for the sacred mountain and especially a symbol of regeneration and rebirth. So you can find it in a funerary context and as such it can also be found in Christian environment. But it also has the much merrier meaning of fertility, both male (the shape) and female (the pine nuts inside it). You can find it as a cake, bringing good luck, or on gateposts, and especially on bed posts. Do you remember those beautiful brass or iron bedposts? It often appears as an architectural ornament, and it was often employed in Neo-classical art. While it lost its religious meaning, the stone pine cone is still a favorite architectural ornament here, with a sort of lingering sexual flavor, which is translated as 'good luck'. At Christmas, of course, its fertility meaning becomes an orgy of glass, plastic, chocolate tree ornaments! Thank you for your kind comments.

it's hard for me to make out the actual pine cones, but that's not a fault of the picture, just of my seeing (lol)...but I'm familiar with the pine as a symbol of all you wrote in your excellent introduction. (I did a study of the pine tree as symbol of rejuvenation & eternal life some years back...it wasn't an extensive study by any means, but it certainly backed what you've written.) It really is an eclectic collection of elements, both stone, metal & wall; interesting mix of capitals, and you've captured these so we see mix of decorative elements here. And I assume, from the painting, that the rider is heralding people up the road, as his companion has halted his ride for a moment while the heralder blows his trumpet. A fascinating capture, and as always your descriptions are first rate.
