Description

Today and tomorrow I'll post some details of the decorating band of the twin villas. Actually this one is the balcony which is also the roof of the entrance porch beneath. The statue in the corner is a lion. The lion was the symbol of the Republic of Venice as well as the Region Veneto. It comes from St. Mark's animal, that was the old, glorious Republic as well as the city of Venice's patron saint. You can see this symbol all over the Venetian sphere of influence,as faraway as Cyprus, Rhodes and Dalmatia. Here the lion has neither the Gospel (peace) nor the sword (war), because this was a private house, and the Republic didn't exist any longer, when it was built, but the animal itself remembers the region's old past. In fact, this decorative element is common on gate pillars, staircase banisters, etc. The battle is probably an episode from the history of Venice, because there are ships in one of the scenes.

Outstanding capture Sandra and thanks for the dedi - wonderful birthday present from you. I went into ZOOM right away, then read your very informative narrative then back into ZOOM. Did know that the lion was the symbol of the Republic of Venice. Learn something new every day from my friends at RR. Very well done. Thanks, Dana
