Description
The word "force" is used in many parts of northern England as a synonym for "waterfall"; it comes from the old Norse word fors
The stream rises at Stybarrow Dodd at over 2300 feet and flows north easterly before turning south on an 5 mile journey to Ullswater.
Just under a mile from the lake the stream known as Aira Beck makes a 65 foot drop over what is known as Aira Force.
From there the beck makes its way over quite a number of far less dramatic but nonetheless very picturesque falls and weaves its way over craggy formations of rock.
