Description

Almost four decades ago my conversion from landlubber to Sea Dog began in recruit training at the San Diego Naval Training Center. For nine long weeks we learned knot tieing, Navy history, rate and ranks and nautical terminology. And twice every day we halted whatever we were doing. At 8am every morning, impecably uniformed sailors raised the flag while the National Anthem was played. Everyone stopped whatever they were doing, stood at attention and saluted in the direction of this flag pole. At sunset we did the same as the flag was lowered. These ceremonies were called "Morning Colors" and "Evening Colors". The Naval Training Center is long gone and a civilian developer has turned many of the building into private enterprises. Part of the plan has been to retain as much of the historic flavor of the base. Last week I got a chance to wander around for a few hours, recalling old times and taking a few pictures; some worthy of sharing. No better place to start than at the center of activity for the base: Attention to Colors! :)
