A fine looking banjo. It was a relatively new "popular" instrument when the Civil War began and was a staple of many campfire bands - most notably Jeb Stuart's. (African slaves had brought the original variety over many years before.)

I come from Alabama with a banjo on my knee, I'm going to Louisiana, my true love for to see It rained all night the day I left, the weather it was dry The sun so hot I froze to death; Susanna, don't you cry. Oh, Susanna, don't you cry for me I come from Alabama, With my banjo on my knee. And now the song will be ringing in my ears for days, LOL! Great capture!!
