Description

Innominate Tarn Innominate..a word I had never come across and on my walk over Haystacks wondered as to its meaning as it is out of character with any other word I have ever heard of in this area. The word "Innominate" means "without a name or anonymous" and is derived from the Latin word "n min tus", which means "nameless" Located just below the mountain summit of haystacks it is neither remarkable or interesting and certainly not the most picturesque tarn in the Lake District, but this tarn was chosen by the legendary fell walker Alfred Wainwright to be his final resting place and his wife Betty scattered his ashes on the shore of this tarn after his death in 1991. It is a place that many would pass by with neither a second glance or an awareness of its links to Alfred Wainwright. But if one pauses for a while and rests on the rocky shoreline there is a peaceful quietness about the place and when Wainwright did these walks before the introduction of the tourist industry no doubt being a solitary person would have found great pleasure in the peace and solitude of these surroundings. The word "Tarn" is of Norse origin and means small lakes which derives from the word 'tjorn', meaning teardrop.

It's so interesting to see this from your angle here, and I can well see why he chose this spot. I do so enjoy your walks..thankyou!

A beautiful shot. It's been years since I was last at Innominate Tarn, but you've managed to capture lighting more lovely than anything I remember seeing with my own eyes. Might interest you to know that it was Wainwright himself who named it 'Innominate'. His books were our constant companions on regular rambles over the fells, so Innominate and Haystacks formed something of a pilgrimage.
