Description

It's the BIGGEST and ugliest bug I ever saw. This guy was down by the mail box yesterday morning. Looks like he's from mars. Below is some info. The adult insect, sometimes called an imago, is usually 2 to 5 cm (1 to 2 in) long, although some tropical species can reach 15 cm (6 in), e.g. Pomponia imperatoria from Malaysia. Cicadas have prominent eyes set wide apart on the sides of the head, short antennae protruding between or in front of the eyes, and membranous front wings. Also, commonly overlooked, cicadas have 3 small eyes located on the top of the head between the two large eyes that match the color of the large eyes, giving them a total of five eyes. Desert cicadas are also among the few insects known to cool themselves by sweating,[3] while many other cicadas can voluntarily raise their body temperatures as much as 22 °C (72 °F) above ambient temperature.[4]

These are the most fascinating insects in so many ways; and yes, frightening, not the least because of their size! Nice capture, and doesn't it look like his wings are on upside down? Prehistoric!!

This is actually a really beautiful one. Most I see are brown with little color.

Great shot! I used to catch these in my youth in Texas. My cousins and i would go out right at dusk and catch them while they were in their shells and watch them molt into these.. Brings back alot of memories.

I'm with morningglory on this...I think its also very lovely. The colors and the symmetry is almost poetic - perhaps its just that your skill in capturing him has made him this appealing?

We have wasps here that HUNT cicadas! They actually sting them and then CARRY them back to their nest in the ground. Cool Shot!

Ohhh, he's cute little guy - 'just looking for a home.' I suppose if he landed on my arm though, I might be a bit jumpy!

WOW! An annual cicada...I love the reflective simple eyes like little red lights! Great color here; they're so vividly colored but it never shows up in most photos. This is fantastic and it touches on one of my favorite subjects. Great work!
