Description
This is a Cicada. It is about 1 1/4" (32mm) long. Many people call it a Locust. It gets the 'Dogday Harvestfly' name from the fact that the adults are often seen and heard during the hot dog-days of summer. The nymphs live underground feeding on Pine Tree roots for 3 years before they crawl out of the ground and shed their skins to emerge as adults. The adults do not eat. I see hundreds of the cast off skins each summer.
This is not the Periodical Cicada which emerge in mass at a single locality only once every 13 or 17 years.
