Description

This image, or at least one like it has been in my mind for literally years now. Probably inspired by a couple of NASA's space colony concepts of the 70's, definitely by Ben Bova's novel 'Colony', and obviously to an extent by Greg Bear's 'Eon and Clarke's 'Rama' series! At any rate, after getting the newest version of Cinema 4D, with render instances, and speeded up sub poly displacent, I did a couple of tests with large amounts of trees, and then started to put this idea to the test. All modeled and rendered in Cinema 4D, apart from the addition of the little girl (my daughter) in Photoshop, as well as post render colour tweaks etc. Cheers Adam

Very nice! o/ It would drive me nuts living there though since looking at it alone makes my head spin (could also be the remainders of an hangover 0.0). Anyway, how many poly's are we looking at?

;) - Riko - hard to say exactly, as I am not sure whether the render instanced trees are considered in the ultimate poly count or not!? - the scene manager states 4.5 million. :)

So where is the Apple product? ;) Great scene! Recently read Rama. What sort of render time are we looking at?

Really amazing work Adam. I was inspired by such books and images as a kid too. When I got the ebot saying you had a new gallery image, I was expecting another Apple related product image. This is a real treat! Though, you could of named it iColony, or some such. ;]

Thanks folks! ;) - Lol! on the 'Apple' comments ;D - makes a change to do this kind of thing again - this IS what I LOVE to do, and always have - just not been possible to do much of it in recent years, but I aim to change that - this image only goes part the way to some of the stuff I really want to create.

You know of course that this is one if those holy grail of CG designs. Many have tried and few have succeeded. You have a great render here. I always look forward to your post. I'm so glad you still post here.

vncnt9663 - I hadn't really thought how others felt about achieving this kind of setting to be honest - I havent really seen many (if any) examples other than the 70's colony paintings, and the occasional book cover illo for Rama etc. I actually wanted to do this kind of thing almost 10 years ago with Bryce and had a few failed attempts. Then I was going to do something very like this for the 'Grand Space Opera' challenge at CGTalk, but didnt have time, and in retrospect, the tools or a full idea of the techniques!! - then when the Eon challege came up, I was gutted as I just didn't have the time to take part! :] Either way, it's been waiting in the wings for a long time, and now I have figured some stuff out, I intend to explore the concepts further, especially after a re-read of RAMA! :D
