Description

Hell is for children. This is a dedication to all abused children in this world. Just like the song of which inspired me for the image. But this is also my personal experiences, from working with abused children. And my hopes, that some adults might read this.. and learn something from it. "Hell is for children" is of course an ironic title. But a brutal title will catch the public attention and focus. Pat Benatar and Neil Giraldo wrote the song "Hell is for children". After they read a series of articles in the N.Y Times, about abused children. They also started a foundation to collect money, to help abused children. Rock musicians have a powerful pipe line to the public. And it can be used in a progressive way. Because this matter got a lot of attention, in the years after the song was released. This is the song: Click here to hear the song. Or here. The lyric of the song is amazing and scary.. it talk about.... How love and pain, become one in the same, in the eyes of a wounded child. I have strong personal feelings about this matter too. Because i have seen the consequences of child abuse, up close.. And through conversations with abused kids, i learned what happens in the minds of, battered and abused children. From 1993-1995, i worked for the danish social authorites. I was a project-leader and supervisor for 12-15 danish youngsters..all between the age of 15 and 25. Kids from the shadows. Sons and daughters of alcoholics, drug addicts, criminals, mentally disturbed parents, and so on. Several of them had been abused. Most had simply been left alone, without any kind of parental education or care. It is difficult to be a supervisor for battered and abused teens. Because they have no trust or faith in authorities anymore. It take years to earn just a little bit of their trust. But they actually liked me a lot. I think part of the reason for my success was... That i was a long haired amateur rock musician, and heavy metal guitar player. And an abused child, trust a rock musician more, than they trust social workers, parents, lawyers or politicians. But mentally, it was a hard job...and i got to like all these kids a lot. It is almost impossible.. to keep your thoughts on the job... and avoid bringing it all home, after work. When you see abused teens, get a job or an education, get a new home, a new life.. and you see them smile for the first time in years. You know you made a difference in the world. And that feels fantastic. Unfortunately in 2009, there are still adults, who do not understand why child abuse, and violence towards kids, should never be practised during any circumstances. First of all every adult should know right from wrong... but unfortunately some don't. The consequences are too heavy. The victims are marked for life. Most will never overcome. Many abused kids will try to kill themselves later in life.... And believe it or not...but it's a scientific fact.. some abused kids, will become parents themselves... And they will abuse their own kids, in the same way, they themselves were abused, in their own childhood. Why does it still happen in 2009? Because it's a burden, of which no single authority can lift. It's a very expensive social burden, of which only national and global social responsibility can solve. They say we live in a rich world....maybe it's just a saying. Sometimes i think... a parental drivers license is needed.. but unfortunately it is impossible to administrate. I think it is impossible to prevent child abuse from happening, again and again.... For one simple reason... It would take, that every adult in the world, could seperate right from wrong. But unfortunately humans are...human.

This is a touchy subject for me as a parent. I can't understand how a parent can hurt a child, it just boggles me. I look into my son's eyes and I see so much love, potential and happiness in him, and I'll be damned if that gets squashed. Neglect and torture are not necessary to discipline a child - it takes a patient and loving heart to truly see these young men and women grow up to be sensible adults. Even though they are children, they are still human - they deserve the same respect as any of us. I'm glad you were able to help those teens, I can only hope they have learned to grow from their past and live fulfilling lives.

A very well done and powerful image and dedi Lars. So often today we gloss over or just flat out ignore the suffering of kids around us at our own peril.

wow, Lars, this is touching. how easy and small of someone who can harm an innocent child. looking into the trusting eyes of the 2 year-old I sat on the floor to play with today, I can't even begin to imagine the scene from either side. hugs to you for making a difference in a few lives. well done!

Excellent image and very true words. As one from Social services said, we're the ambulance at the bottom of the cliff, we try to fix it, but it is really up to the parents to not abuse the children!

It is unimaginable and yet it is all to prevalent. Thank you for your work with the children and for reminding us all of the realities the kids are living. It's a lovely picture of an ugly subject. Thank you.

lars this is very very strong, brings tears to my eyes,i cannot say here what i would do with a molester, lest they ban me from this site. when you read newspapers and watch news on tv the only things you see,is murder, abuse and greedy f..head-managers.seems to be the new sports today sadly the important or very important people dont really care. but as long as we take more care of the rights of the offender then of the offended... but then the weird thing is the offender was abused as well in most cases anyway,it is a mean vicious circle, i have to shut down thinking about it, for this morning otherwise my day is blasted. but you brought up a very delicate point and you did good.

I came to your site by way of Dave's (magnus073). This is a great pick of work. Artistically superb and emotionally very disturbing. As I read your words, listened to the song and looked at your image, the words of another song came into my head. Written by Ron Miller, first song by Stevie Wonder, later sung by Joan Baez, which is the version I'm familiar with. The song is "Heaven Help Us All" and this is one of its verses: "Now I lay me down before I go to sleep. In a troubled world, I pray the Lord to keep, Hatred from the mighty, And the mighty from the small, Heaven help us all." Children are the smallest and least able to defend themselves. I think your pessimism about change is well founded. I hope answers are found and humans become more than human. Excellent work.
