Brad Pitt and I share the exact same birthday (month, day, year) outside of that, our stories diverge considerably. Mr. Pitt went on to become an internationally famous superstar, while I have led the much more interesting life of the starving artist. I come from a long line of storytellers (whose gift for gab stretches back through the mists of time to our native Ireland) and professional malcontents who were seemingly born to create something in the arts, be it music, writing, sculpture, painting, or photography. I started writing at age 12 with a screenplay with my cousin Ryan about a planet where everyone looked like Elton John entitled "Don't I Know You?" More screenplays followed, several of which received epic Super-8 production with budgets that sometimes ran up to $10. A few even had sound!  More writing followed: songs, poems, short stories, numerous unfinished novels, etc.. Somewhere in there was an attempt at being a rock star...
Still living at home, at age 22, my father dropped an elderly Nikromatt 35-mm film camera into my lap, in the hopes that I would "make a go of it" as a photojournalist. That didn't happen, but I did develop an abiding love of photography that along with writing and archival work have been among the chief passions of my life. When it comes to my photography, I try to be as creative as possible while at the same time striving for a documentary/archival quality. The only set rules I adhere to, when it comes to making pictures are: 1.) Try not to make the picture blurry, and 2.) Don't drop the camera.

I can't wait either. It was totally cool talking with you. I had such a great time hanging out with everyone. Dave does look like a security guard for the entourage. Even though we were all taking pictures madly Dave and Juanita had a great time and mom can't wait to do it again. This was a great day and this is a wonderful capture of exactly what the day was. Great shot Corey.

Whoa!!! I didn't see you take this, true ninja fashion my friend. I promise that next time we come down, I'll have a camera of my own. and therefore blend in just a bit better with the rest of this zany lot. I think seeing all of the posts derived from this gathering has incredibly interesting. Seeing it all again, but in the eyes of the person behind the camera instead of my own is really cool! Security?.....perhaps a change of career could be in the making.

I like this a lot. I actually remember being aware of this photo in the making and I'm amazed at how lanky I actually am! WOW. This is really good and I like the crisp quality of it. You captured so much of that day in this and I love the way you caught Marilyn just before she had that long moment with the lake; it was cool seeing THAT too. This is a fantastic piece of work.

OMG! I hope Juanita will be okay. It's always the away team member in the red shirt who gets done in by the aliens, isn't it? :P and ... (Finishing the song lyric by Chicago) "I think it was the 4th of July." (Now I've got that stuck in my head.) and ... This is a wonderful shot, full of good memories. I hope this was only my first trip to Chicago, and that there will be many more!

you always had a photo-journalist side to you, and this captures that side, to my eye. It's casual, spontaneous, off the cuff, and yet it has those elements that show your fine-tuned eye inside it all: the line & flow of chip leaning over, the flow of heads from Juanita to Marilyn to the man on the rail (in the back), the line-up of chip's camera & hand with the sign behind him and his cap (etc), the line-up of dave with the sign behind him and how he's almost framed by the railing as well, and so on...I know some photographers say that's all 'accident', but I've been in the arts a long time like you, and I know it's not accident: It's your fine photographic eye seeing the natural music behind your shot. Nice clarity, nice hues, I like all the concrete-white filling up half the shot, and you caught personalities too, each & every one. (I laughed when I thought: Ok, so Tara was under a bush somewhere, photographing a worm; and me? I have no clue! Probably ducking from all you damned photographers pointing your fricking cameras all over! At one point you all were pointing towards me—well, towards something behind me, but I didn't know at the time—and I wanted to raise my hands and say "I surrender!". It's a little harrowing being with 5 photographers at once!) Lovely shot Corey, on many levels. And I hope you're doing well!

To see this shot and to read all the comments is such a joy and fun. Makes me feel I was there myself :-)))
