Description

I was in the mood to take some photo's one day after work this past week; and the only people available were my son and his friend, Tyler. I thought I'd see if Tyler might be interested in a little photo shoot .. luckily he was THRILLED. He was such a sport about it, too. We both had a ball I think. I am not confident in portrait taking really, but I want to start getting more into it I think. I've been trying to find tips and hints online on the subject; and I've found some things that were helpful but I know I have a long ways to go. If anyone knows of some good websites that might help me out, send them my way! Or, if YOU have any pointers for me .. please .. I'm open to any/all suggestions. Where I stumble most on is knowing how to position my model ... I draw a blank, and tend to leave it up to them to come up with the ideas. Dani is a natural in front of the camera (She's seen plenty of episodes of America's Next Top Model with Tyra) to know just how to pose for me. :) So, she's EASY! I ramble now, so if you got this far, I thank you. :) I appreciate any tips/pointers/ideas/hints/and just some plain ole advice, I would be ever so grateful. Thanks in advance. And, thank you for stopping by and for any comments you may decide to make. Hope you are having a wonderful weekend ... tomorrow, I'm taking my new cam to the Zoo again. I hope the monkeys will ham it up good for lol Shari ***************************************************************** ***************************************************************** Thank you for your kind comments and Fav on my previous upload!!: "Something Fun ....". thumb_1951435.jpg

Beautiful portrait. It's hard to grasp a lack of confidence, with a shot like this. But, from one who always questions herself to the Nth degree, I can relate. I've not posted any of my photography here at R, and stick mostly to the fractal forum. Just happily landed on this in the What's New spot. Very glad I did. Best wishes on the learning curve. :)

Nice light, pose, textures and composition. Black and white was a great choice for this. Not sure what advice you need besides, keep on shooting. Hope you made a copy for his mum...

Splendid POV, clarity and subtle lighting effects in this portrait, Sharilyn! Other than that, I know from nothing about creating them, so I can't offer any tips or help on the subject.

This is beautiful Shari. You've got his chiseled profile in a wonderfully soft light and you left a nice amount of empty space in front of him. I think it's perfect. Now it's time to bring in the props they like (letter jackets, hats, sunglasses, cars) and they start to relax on their own.

My only advice about portraiture is to take a LOT of shots, and from a lot of different angles! Sometimes it's the subtle differences that make the portrait come alive. Even a small difference in eye movement gives a portrait a different feel. It's been my experience that the best shots are when the model is totally comfortable or totally unaware of the camera! LOL!

I agree with Tara! The best portraits are those that the model is not aware of... I'm afraid my only portraits are of Kayla... smiles This image though, is stunning IMO. The angle is great and the subtle softness perfect. A lovely young man and great pic Shari! :)

I have the same problem! I know how to take a good portrait shots but only if the subject has personality enough to pose themselves. Let me know if you come across any insight on this subject! Nice portrait work!

I tend to agree with the comments that point out that the best models don't know they're modeling. But of course, there are those times when you want to be bossy and just tell someone to "hold that pose." Having said that, I must say that this is an intriguing portrait. I love the unorthodox angle...usually models are shot from the front and this breaks that mold immediately with your positioning and Tyler's own neck-revealing, gender-defying pose. (I think you have an instinctive knack for portraits since you didn't go full on frontal with a male figure, as is the more common approach. You actually focus on the face, but reveal a sensuous part of the neck--something most commonly done with female models, since that posture is a female posture that communicates all sorts of non-verbal cues in terms of social order and personal emotional state [okay, I've read too many books and articles on biology and language, and it's showing!]...okay you weren't asking for THAT kind of a comment, but there it is.) I love the clarity and the hints of vulnerability caught here. Great work and needless to say, I'm quite happy to see this and look forward to more. I think doing this in black and white adds to the effect; it heightens the emotion, draws the viewer away from the distractions that color can often impose, and well...the whole thing is just crisp and clean. THAT is a good thing.
