Description

I shot this one last spring, and after a number of shots by sheer luck I succeeded in seizing the instant. Since when I reached my 100th I had forgotten it, this time I've presented myself with this prize for my 200th. Even if this prize is currently a bit controversial. Goldfish (Carassius auratus) were one of the earliest breed of fish to be domesticated (from a dark greyish brown carp native to Asia) and are still one of the most commonly kept fish in aquariums and outdoor water gardens. A fad among North American college students for many years was swallowing goldfish as a stunt and as an initiation process for fraternities. The practice gradually fell out of popularity, and is now rare. In the Belgian city of Geraardsbergen an annual festival is held where the medieval tradition of swallowing a small fish swimming in a cup of wine still survives. In many countries, the operators of carnivals and fairs commonly give goldfish away in plastic bags as prizes for winning games. Rome, Italy, passed a law in late 2005, which banned the use of goldfish or other animals as prizes. Rome has also banned the keeping of goldfish in goldfish bowls, on the premise that it is cruel for a fish to live in such a small space. This one was taken in a small mirror pond-fountain near Padova. No fish or other animals were either hurt or otherwise exploited for this photo. Thank you for your kind comments.

Congrats 200th, great capture, I am glad it was banned to keep goldfish in bags at the fair. Poor fish were won by people who had nowhere to keep them!!!!!

I am absolutely in love with this picture. Are you sure it isn't a beautiful painting? :) It would be worth 1000 shots to get this one. Bravo to Rome for banning the cruelty. Thanks for that history.
