Description
Perhaps some of the most heart-wrenching moments I experience while visiting Elmwood Cemetery come from viewing the graves of children. They are almost always dated from the 1800's, many around the yellow fever years of Memphis.
You can still feel vibrating in the air the unthinkable pain of parents having to lay their child to rest. That coupled with the sadness of a forgotten child never having their chance in life can be a bit much for an old softie like me.
On this tombstone the parents had sculptured their lost child safely in the arms of a loving angle as he or she is being whisked away to the next life. I imagine the thought of their little lost loved one in the arms of a loving angle was the only comfort realized with such a tragic turn of events.
A while back Julia and I saw a simlar themed tombstone down in Mississippi, and it inspired the following poem of hers:
Sleep sweetly
precious child
sleep now
bathe in heaven's light
may angel's wings
keep you
safe from harm
death cannot break
eternal bonds love made
nor will death erase
your memory
from our mortal sight
your beloved face
is forever etched
on our hearts
our love could not hold you here
so till we meet again
my darling lil' one
we give you to heaven's care
sigh. . . .
Perhaps I should stick with buildings, mountains and beaches. I sometimes feel too much at Elmwood.

This has to be one of the most poignant images I've ever seen here - even without the poem! And more people should feel too much every now and again - the world would be a far better place...

I am moved by your image, and in combination with Julia's lovely, mournful poem, I find I am moved to tears. Superb photo and words, in a very touching symbiosis.
