Description

This is Gloucester’s Fisherman's Memorial, known to locals as the "Man at the Wheel" statue. It faces the harbor in Gloucester, Massachusetts. It is in memorial, to all of the Gloucester fisherman, lost at sea. It is eight feet tall, cast in bronze and on a granite base. The quote on the base is from Psalm 107. It was designed by British sculptor, Leonard Craske. As an example, in 1879, a horrendous storm, in the North Atlantic, took 29 fishing ships and crews totaling 249 men. The statue was to commemorate Gloucester's 300th anniversary and memorialize the thousands of fishermen lost at sea. Thanks for stopping by, taking a peak and for all your previous comments and favs. Dana

Oh, the memory in me you jog with this. So many years ago as a young child, I stood and looked at this in wonder. Too young to read, my father told me the story and what it stood for. I found it to be a very moving experience. Your photo is clear and brings the entire monument to view.

Beautiful statue and capture! Love that we're looking up at him, and see him looking out to sea.

Very nice photo Dad, you’re really making me homesick now. :~) Would you have a photo for the wives and children’s memorial?

Thanks for this Dana. I've stood right in front of this statue...as a boy of 12 more than 50 years ago. This goes right into my favorites.

Lovely sculpture, we have one to the fishermen here. The town next to me (actually in one road you can stand with one leg in one town & one in the other) is a well known fishing town. We are renowned for fish & chips!!!!

Seems as though wherever there are fishermen, there are memorials to the ones lost. This is a beautiful way to honor them.
